Evidently, the only thing wrong with mine was the black gear that meshes with the worm gear had fallen off the shaft. Of course, I broke the cable clip, a console ear, a housing ear and the speedo needle repairing the odo! Now I use a wooden match to indicate speed. How appropro! Guess I coulda carved and painted it white.

I don't love to tinker, especially but hate waste money and this is the kind of thing that seems a waste to spend money on, until I'm at me wits end.
