Subject: Canadian Tire "Eliminator" Smart charger too noisy for camping
              use?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Many old loaf Westy's came with a stock built in 12V transformer for camping use. My '95 EV westy has one also. But the '82 Westy doesn't.

I was thinking of building in a modern smart charger into the '82 (instead of just a 12-14V power transformer). I have a Canadian Tire 12/8/2A "Eliminator Intelligent Battery Charger" since about 2 years. With a three stage charge cycling, it seems to have a great reconditioning effect on my (often old) batteries. These are also reasonably cheap ($79 regular, but often on sale for $49). Much cheaper than a high end charger from e.g. Xantrex.

Only hitch I can think of is that mine has a high pitched noise from the PWM circuits. I first thought this might be characteristic of most modern switched supplies, but a friend said it is not necessarily so.

Therefore I was wondering: Does anyone else have this charger? Does it have the high pitched wistling? (Not the fan noise, but a higher tone; the fan can easily be exchanged). I was thinking maybe I only got a bad unit.

Martin
