The ONLY way to be sure is to move the engine so one of the cylinders is at TDC of the compression stroke (both valves closed). Then the rotor should point to the plug wire for that cylinder, just as the points are opening. That should get you close enough for the engine to run.

From there, it's just firing order (1-4-3-2, going clockwise on the distributor). Cylinder 1 is passenger side, front, 2 is behind 1. 3 is driver side front, 4 is behind 3.
