To those that responded, some off-list, too.  Using all the suggestions,
I've determined the main problem is the alternator is not functioning.
We'll be starting there with a rebuilt.  Sorry about the vague description
of "not starting".  It's difficult to include all the information needed to
get help when you ask for it.  I thought I was including everything, what
with the various readings and descriptions of terminals, model year, etc
etc..Sometimes you're just too close to something to realize you've missed
something like "Hey, is it cranking over and not starting, or not cranking
at all"
This one, it's amazing it is still showing any signs of life at all, the way
it's treated..Some people should NOT have complex mechanical devices..my SO
is one of those..If I was more agreeable, she'd have me fixing broken and
neglected stuff for her 25 hrs a day..but, I digress.
  It was only clicking, like the battery connections were corroded (they
were) or the starter was not functioning (it was fine) or the rain got
through the broken door and shorted out a switch, or or or..
  Thanks all, new/rebuilt alternator coming, soon to be followed by a
replacement battery, I'm sure.
