Smack the edge of the drums from the backside.  I have bent two drums by hitting them on the side too hard.  Once off, drill and tap two holes in the face of the drum to accept the small bolts that secure the drum to the hub.  In the future, you can screw those bolts in the holes and as they begin to push on the hub the force will pop the drum off.  No hammer needed. good luck jake 82 AC Westy 87 Vanagon Syncro GL

Hey All,

I tend to breeze through the "difficult" stuff and then have trouble with the "easy" stuff.

Does anyone have a good tip for removing the brake drums (I have an 88 Vanagon).

I typically just give a few bangs around the outside and off the drum comes....maybe I didn't bang enough (started getting self conscience as it was midnight and I didn't want to wake the neighbors)

But, if anyone has a better tip, please share.

Cheers, Ben '88 Wolfsburg ej22
