I had a fuel line on a '91 Jetta that was rubbing against a metal clip the engine compartment and eventually wore through. Luckily I smelled the gas before it caught fire. I informed the local dealer since this obviously was an issue from the factory (might have been a one-off problem but was not something I had ever touched) but he was not really interested.

I've been thinking of replacing all the rubber fuel lines that snake across the engine with a custom metal fuel pipe setup that connects to the "rails" with short sections of rubber tube at just that point. Anyone tried anything along these lines?
