Yes, this "FEATURE" is a  major PITA and one reason I would not recommend
this canvass.  I have one  in grey on my '87, installed last spring, and used in
Mexico same as  Jonathan.  The problem with that front window flap is that you
must undo  the zipper then pull down the flap undoing the Velcro.  So, now
it's late  at night, dark, had a few beers, it's cooled off, so you want the
close that  front window.  It's a MAJOR PITA to get the two ends of the zipper
together  to start the zipper ?  What moron thought up that plan ?  The original
 canvass had a one piece zipper all around the sides as the flap was round at
the  top corners not square !  Much, much better !
