Plus, you can used the cast Syncro housing for a much longer duration.
The 2wd plastic ones tend to melt and warp over time.
They are available new on eBay all the time for 9.99.
I have purchase numerous ones there, but have replaced them all with Syncro versions.

T-stat housing... $25, and that includes both pieces.  Readily available and
easier to replace than a 1.9

Let's see you find a new H-pipe...  How about a new junction/bleeder for
those ridiculous hoses that loop around the engine.  And... let's see you
find new ones of those ridiculous hoses.


You want to talk broken bolts... look no further than the God-awful 1.9
water pump and thermostat cover.  Far greater chance of finding a broken
bolt and kludged fix on the 1.9

Water distribution box... $35.  Readily available and there are only TWO
versions: early (1986) & late.

And... if you can't figure out where those 5 hoses go, you shouldn't be
doing any work on a Vanagon.  It's not brain surgery: 2 from the back, 1
from the side, and 2 from the front.  And guess what???  They're different
sizes or lengths to make it easy for you...

The bleed rail was a great idea.  The 2.1 will practically bleed themselves
because they gave the air a place to escape.  No jacking up one end of the
van and doing the 1.9 bleed dance...

And if those little water hoses are too much for you, you shouldn't be
working on a Vanagon.

Sorry... this one is a slam dunk.  Parts availability and efficiency win.
You can keep that kludged up 1.9 cooling system if you like.  There's a
reason that VW got rid of it after only 2.5 years... it sucks!

riught - not until the plastic t-stat housing melts or warps,
or until the brass nut inserts spin in the t-stat6 housing and you have to
grind off a t-stat cover bolt head in place just to get the t-stat cover
off.

and.......if you were in mexico and that water distrubution box went
south........the one with about 5 connectioins on it that you can't tell
what is what and what goes where..............you would almost Never be able
to re-create that part in a remote break-down
situation............AND.........
there are several versions of that part, all similar but all different !

no thank you.
yes, some things are dumb about the 1.9 cooling system ........but at least
it's metal.
and engine bleeding is not a problem.  Not sure why they went to the trouble
of having that 'bleed rail' around the top of the 2.1 engine comnpartment
with all the little hoses.
it's not like 1.9's have a problem with engine coolant bleeding.
