The A/C units I have seen installed under the rear bench seat were supplemental units and not expected to cool the whole Vanagon by themselves. I have seen them paired with in-dash aftermarket units and stock ceiling units. The ones I looked at could only be run when the main unit was on first, though that is just a matter of wiring.
