dear dave
my mechanical skills are considered moderate at best yet ]
the door has been an easy fix for me on both the 69 type 2 and my current 89
vanagon
before you start .. have some one who is mechanical help you
have you or them sit in the van and watch carefully to see what exactly
happens
when the top guide falls out of the track ...
see if it is the track or the small arm that holds the guide wheel
lay under neath the van and watch what happens there as well
the bottom guide wheel and the small arm that hold it in place could be
failing somehow
watch the guide under the skirt running astern ... what does it do ...
if you dont have a bently manual ... GET ONE NOW
attempt nothing with out guidance form the bently
now that you have a bently
there are explicit instructions on how to line up and/or repair the sliding
door
it takes two people
you require a rubber hammer and a rubber wedge to remove the cover over the
side guide that runs astern on the outside of the van
you should measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the door
then have something that height nearby to set/rest the bottom of the door on
on as you remove parts ...
your helper should be suitable for the job as inexperience can lead to a
door falling down so this is not a job for your distractable 7-14 year old
...
with bently in hand you should have little trouble sussing out and affecting
repairs
good luck ..
yours

There are two kinds of jobs in the world:
Picking up garbage and telling people things.
Successful people do both, with the same good attitude. (riw)
