Or........... if you tilt the engine, assuming it's out of the van, they'll
just fall out sometimes.
Or I grab them and pull them out with a tool like a pliers, except it
expands ....like it's an 'inside grabber'.

they  can get stuck or hung up on oil crud too, Carb cleaner might help
dissolve that.
there's no sleeve of any kind.
ideally you want to put them back in the exact same spot they came out of.
