Only the older vanagon rod bolts (1.9?) were TTL, according to my local shop.

It's the bolts, not the nuts, that would be classified as TTL, but that's not the issue here (though it is with older motors). The issue is that Bentley says "always replace" the nuts, not the bolts, for what reason I don't know.
