you might find this usefull. I think you might have read this on this group too about 6 months ago. 2.1's eventually have oil pressure issues. Because the rod bolts stretch or something,. and the rod bearing oil clearance gets of, think that's what I read. And that they are rebuilt with new stretch rod bolts that don't have that problem. I think that's what I read. very common to see in Bently 'always replace' on many engine fasteners. Diesel flywheel bolts I think have that. For rod nuts, I always replace them. did you just search on line for torque specs for engines, or VW engines. ?

in my Bentley, on page 15.32, it says ( with picture ) says............33 ft lb for the nuts - lubricate contact surface. then is says for the 2.1 MY86 and up ............ 22 ft lb. plus half turn, always replace. so there's your torque spec.

so 1.9's are 33 ft lbs, 2.1's are 22 ft lbs plus half turn, and always replace the 2.1 nuts, right there in the book. in Bentley..........there's a lot of info with the pictures, which I regard as very good. scott www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Felder To: Scott Daniel - Turbovans Cc: vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com Sent: Friday, July 18, 2008 6:50 AM Subject: Re: What torque for 2.1 rod nuts?

I'll be curious what you find out here Jim,

So far, only your post : )

as on my next 2.1 re-do I'm going down to the rod bearings and new rod nuts or whatever is right there. I'm curious where you got your new nuts and what they cost,

$24.00

and how do you know they are not torque-to-yield...........

Only the older vanagon rod bolts (1.9?) were TTL, according to my local shop.

and I thought only bolts were toque-to-yield, not nuts.

It's the bolts, not the nuts, that would be classified as TTL, but that's not the issue here (though it is with older motors). The issue is that Bentley says "always replace" the nuts, not the bolts, for what reason I don't know.

Per bentley, I bought new rod nuts for my rebuild. What to I torque them to? The instructions in the Bentley sound like a torque-to-yield bolt, which mine are not. Thanks,

Jim
