That basic procedure works with 2 spider gear Vanagon diffs but the
recessed hole you speak off is not there on 4 spider gear Vanagon
diffs(like Syncros...)
For those I think you have to mark the exact position of the left side
adjusting ring and then loosen it a few turns so the diff assembly can
be moved over slightly. Then the sleeve can slide out enough to uncover
the mated ends of the 2 shafts and the shaft will then unscrew. The diff
adjustment is critical so the adjusting ring must go back exactly where
it was. You called the sleeve a collar/gear but only the early
transmissions have a gear on the sleeve, for reverse. 80-83 aircooled
and 82 diesel 4 speeds have the gear teeth on the sleeve (as well as the
recess in the diff). Later models have no gear teeth there and may not
have the recess either.
