Exactly right, 12 volts can frost them up just like the other setting. The problem is that they can get left set on 12 volts for years and years. Then every time the vehicle is driven the 12 volt system is active. This can cook the connections on the top of the fridge and elsewhere. Then they stop working well or at all on 12 volts.

Another thing I have found is that the fridge works better on 12 volts if connected to an aux battery. The stock connection is through the main fuse panel and with the long wire run and other things running the fridge gets a lower voltage than it could with a more direct 12 volt wiring source.
