after i tried heating, hammering, prying and other techniques for four hours I pried with three big screwdrivers at the same time. using three against the backing plate has the advantage that the backing plate cannot flex away since it would have to deform in two directions. it the popped off relatively easily. If you hammer too much you will get your drums out of shape and have a pulsing brake pedal afterwards. I ended up putting ew ones on, they are relatively cheap.
