It was the Dodge Omni and the Plymouth Horizon I believe, not the Pacer. They had a VW engine in them but I'm sure if it was a Rabbit engine or not. That was back during the last energy crisis where American car builders were scrambling to build fuel efficient cars so they sought help from Europe and Japan. Dodge, etc. used VW, Ford sold the Fiesta (German I believe), Chevy used an imported diesel engine in the Chevette etc....

If anyone has a lead on tone of these, I would appreciate a pointer. Of particular interest is the fact these vehicles had a 1972 Rabbit engine in them.
