That's a pretty , no, a VERY broad question.
first, you know it would be a gasoline van converted to diesel, right ?
then your next question is WHICH VW diesel engine does it have.
it could be a 1.6 non-turbo,
a 1.6 turbo,
a 1.9 normally asperated ( non-turbo )
or a 1.9 TD, assuming it's not a more modern electronic tdi.

what to watch for ? how many miles on it ?
All the vanagons I see, or get - half the time I'm the first person to ever
clean or lube dozens of things on them.
You should or could hire a knowledgible professional to check out the whole
thing for you ...........brakes, suspension, transmission , electrical
system, now solid the engine conversion work is etc.

price would be nice to know. Are we talking $ 5K or 8K or ? ....
but you don't have to say,
but 'get it checked out carefully' !!
And ....................well................'VW diesel engines pushing a big
ole vanagon ' ............they're under a bit of stress doing that, let's
say.

I am considering a 1985 Diesel Vanagon (passenger). Is there anything in
particular I should be aware of? Are they a decent/reliable vehicle? Are
