you got the wrong hose.
85's can have either the smaller diameter metal main coolant pipes - 'early
85's '
or the later style- the larger plastic main pipes.
that's what you have a hose for, which is not the right part obviously.

you can get the right part by asking for one for an 84 Vanagon,
and the parts person or system should have asked you for a VIN ...
to determine if you have an early 85 that has metal smaller diameter main
pipes, or an 85 with the larger diameter plastic  main  pipes.
or possibly someone put metal pipes in yours where it originally had larger
plastic main pipes, but that's unlikely.
