Yes.  The copper has nothing to do with it -- it's a coiled nichrome
element packed in ceramic powder and stuffed into the copper
tube.  So don't go poking around at the end of it, just use the wire
leads.  If you can reach them with the probes without disconnecting,
that's fine, it won't hurt the reading.  Otherwise disconnect them.

You should see something less than 140 ohms from lead to lead.
