This is probably the easiest of repairs unless the bail (clip) is rusted into the head and you snap it off.

Pull the clip down, remove the cover, clean all surfaces, install with a new gasket.

You need to determine why the gasket failed though. If it is cracked and crunchy, that is a sign the engine is has overheated or is running hotter than it should. If you really want a tight seal, forget the gasket and just use the right stuff. One thing about a leaky valve cover gasket is that if oil is getting out, it is likely that dirt is getting in.

Could someone email a copy of Bentley instructions to replace valve gasket. Could probably figure it iut, but never done it on a VW. Thought there might be a couple of other things I could take care of while in there. Already purchased new V-belts. Will be replacing the plugs, wire, dist cap, rotor, etc in next week or so. Thanks in advance.
