dear all before attempting any procedure on a vanagon the very first thing to do is buy a BENTLEY ... 2. turn to the pages dealing with sliding door 3. read carefully about the removal ... add two things to their description... another guy who is capable of holding the sliding door in case of some unplanned incident also have other guy there to hold the cover plate out while you tap up against your rubber wedge... 4. for the sake of safety have some sort of device there large enough and strong enough to hold the weight of the door once the sliding wheel has been removed from the track ...

the directions in the bentley are pretty clear ...

oh yes we also gave the cover a tap forward before tapping upward ... to make sure the ends were clear to avoid bending due to catching ...
