it's sorta like this..........
if you CAN'T DRIVE WHERE YOU WANT TO out in beautiful country.........
why bother to drive a stock vangon then. ???!!

like don't let the lameness of the vehicle limit your enjoyment of nature.
it's like carrying a a spare short block or long block on long  trips in a
stock diesel vanagon .......
i mean, if you don't trust the vehicle so much that you want to carry a
spare engine, like give me a break ! Like why bother you know !

go where ya wanna go. Take it easy on the equipment. Use really good oil and
cooling system products, keep it in good tune, and drive it
nice............and you'll do fine. And think about a subaru engine upgrade
or whatever.
  I sure wouldn't let the vhelcile dictate where I go.
People have gone all over the wolrd in Citroen 2CV's...............those are
like 25 horse power.
I'll grant that there is a safety factor in having too slow a
vehicle.........but a vanagon can go at least 30 up most mountain
roads..........and if they're in good shape, they're up to long climbs in
hot weather.
 But enjoy the gorgeous country out there.
