hot dog Mike.
may your van perform flawlessly for him !
and yes, that's a very gradual route generally, very pretty ......
there's great hiking right at the crest of Carson Pass too, or very close to
there, Either hiking south, or right up a face on the north side........very
spectacular.
And laying back in the warm pool at Grover Hot Springs, and being outdoors
at the same time - not too shabby at all !
The weirdest thing about that whole route is on the west side you end up on
lots of small raods that don't seem to be very direct or
effecient........and a lot of time gets eaten up there getting to somewhere
that can get into the Bay Area easily.
here's a variation ........there are some nice not too traveled good two
lane roads........one comes into Fairfield on I-80......
From Fairfield your'e right in the thick of it , the crowded Bay Area in
minutes.
and another ( I want to say Hwy 4 ) comes into the very east side of the Bay
Area like right below Mt. Diablo........'Dublin' I want to say.
I've thought for years that the trucks should have their own parrallel
Interstate 80 through the Sierras, on all the Western slope
there..........they wipe out and close that road all the time. Beautiful
country.
I'll give your van a remote 'Psychic Healing' from here !
Scott

To all of you that responded to my question on 'least steep California
Sierra passes' - THANKS!
- Markus, David K, Don, Donna, David O, Joe, Mike M, Pete, B&S, Scott, Gary
(& any others that I may have missed)
Overall, I-80 seemed to be favoured for reasonable gradients.
- I'm biased against this road since it is a major 4-6 lane freeway with
lots of big trucks and fast traffic; plus I've been stuck for too many hours
on it in winter ski traffic.... Also since that is a long detour for this
trip, I've suggested to my brother (for he is actually the one to be taking
this trip - out from England to borrow my Westy for a 3 week trip around
California) to take the Carson Pass (Highway 88) which no-one seemed to
think would be too steep. The recommendations to stop off at Bodie Ghost
Town and Grover Hot Springs are great ideas & have been added to the trip.
Thanks again (hoping that my van will perform flawlessly....)
Mike,
'87 Westy
