Greg you mention the manual transmissions. On the aircooleds and diesels i believe, the transmission is mounted in a different position than that of the '83.5+ manual trannies. The front mount may be the same but the location is different because i think, one transmission is longer. You do realize what i will have for sale, is an automatic.... In that case i have always been told they are the same minus the Oil cooler (which isn't on the aircooled ones as Chris pointed out). The mounting should line up, and if you flip your way through the bently for automatic transmission rebuilding, you'll find they changed a few subtle things about a million times. It's not even just between aircooled and water cooled, they just kept changing gaskets, spacing, little things like that, but the bulk of it all IS the same. The gearing is the same. The case is from what i understand, mostly the same, and i would assume that as was mentioned, a bit of fiddling with the front tranny mount should make it work.
