Subject: I'm back, miss anything? Need an ECU
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Hi All,

I've been ignoring Vanagon traffic for a couple months, getting ready to move my family and our two home businesses to our new house in Bend, Oregon.

I took our 84 Westfalia, Mellow Yellow, to the shop, Hugo's Foreign Car in Encinitas, so they could give it the once-over before I drive it, towing a small utility trailer, the 1,000 miles from here to our new house. Asked them to look into this odd idle-stumble thing that has had me puzzled for over a year (engine idles fine for the first minute, then starts to miss, rpms drop, engine dies -- pressure on gas pedal prevents this, but there is this flat spot when accelerating out of idle, which suddenly goes away the engine takes off just fine). Their sniffer found that when the engine went into this seizure, the mixture got real lean.

They fussed around with the air flow meter as it was a bit out of adjustment, but this didn't help.

Last year I plugged in a loaner ECU and it did not change the behavior. But the shop plugged their One Known-To-Be-Good ECU into the van and the engine ran just fine. He doesn't have another, but he'll look around tomorrow morning.

Anyone know of an ECU for an 84 that seems to be good? My onboard O2 sensor shows the mixture is just fine when running, but I'd like to take care of this issue before the move.
