People have done this before - it is more or less a plug and play even with some minor fabrication from what I understand.  Beside the fuel filler location there is some welding required for the steering rack and for the mounting points for the drive shaft protection.

If I can install Unimog u435 axles on a Volkswagen LT then this is certainly possible for you to install Syncro bits on a 2WD!  :-)
