Jeannie, the best and least expensive way to fix this little problem is to have the piece you have repaired. Remove the entire sway bar with the broken drop link still on it. Take to a machine shop and have them weld on new threaded stud that will duplicate what was there. Install new bushings and bushing sleeve, still available from the dealer. Use liberal amounts of anti-seize or grease on the bushing sleeve as the reason these are breaking is the sleeve is rusting to the stud and causing it to break, It's got to move in there. All drop links for the various Vanagon models are now obsolete. I'm surprised you found one at a dealer. His asking price is because he knows what he has is obsolete.

I found one at the dealership for $170 (gasp!). Is this what you would recommend? Or is there a hidden cache of obscure VW parts I'm not aware of? We are in Denver, and were planning on leaving next week for our yearly vacation (in the bus!) and time is rather tight for this fix.<<<<
