Thanks Dennis.
Thanks for writing.
The blue Vanagon wire connects to the Jetta alternator. The alt light
comes on at ign position and goes out when engine running as does the
oil light. The fridge relay (on fridge itself) was never connected
when air cooled engine was installed. It never had this "engine not
shutting off" problem. And FWIW, I rewired the interior lights/sink
pump and radio so they are supplied power from aux battery via a
seperate fuse on the panel.
In my original post I called the brake warning light (" ! ") an e-brake light.
I didn't describe what happened well.
The engine idled perfectly with ignition switch off. When I pulled up
the hand brake, the engine off. I also noticed the " ! " light didn't
come on. With engine off, I had to put key to ignition position to get
this light to come on. With engine off, and by feel, (seeing when
light came on when raising the hand brake lever) I guesstimated that
the engine was being shut off as the light (actually the switch at
base of handbrake lever being closed) was being "turned on".
This may sound strange but.....
I wonder if I haven't have the dang brake warning light plug in
backwards all this time.
Tonight I pulled the inst. cluster to check stuff out. I redid the
connection from battery to fuse panel as this connector tended to
unplug when dropping the panel. When reinstalling the inst. cluster, I
got to thinking about the brake warning light plug.
In Bentley, I see 15 from ign. switch goes to ign. coil, to a junction
at back of S12, to junction at back of S11, then from there to the
brake warning light. IF the brake warning light plug was in backwards,
I wonder if I simply provided a ground via the handbrake switch to the
coil thus stopping the engine? Or possibly have been compromising my
ignition system thus causing a poor running engine.
Far fetched yes, but it was a strange occurrence!
Neil.
