Different springs were used in different years and models. By different I mean different diameter wire, different number of coils, and different overall length.

Since VW did not put full part numbers on the springs it is difficult to assess when and how things changed by anecdotal means. The parts data shows various part numbers over the years and models. Different color paint spots were put on the springs to help tell them apart. Different numbers of spots of a given color were used to match slight variations during production of what were meant to be the same spring. To complicate things further, the same spot colors were used on very different springs over time.
