Hi Volks,

I had the day off work today and spent some quality time in the driveway with my VWs...

The Vanagon got treated to a new #4 exhaust gasket with fresh bolts and a nice goopy slathering of copper RTV. It was a real PITA to realign the exhaust flange with the head, but with two ratchet straps and a bumper jack I was able to pull it off once I removed the oil filter. Now it's nice and smooth... Can't quite call it quiet with a cherry bomb muffler back there, but at least the sound is smooth and uniform and there are no more backfires or popcorn sounds back there.

Eventually I will change out the whole works for a better system, but for the next month or two I think I'll be OK with the way it is now.

I also finished off treating the seam rust on the driver's side front fender.. I treated the area weeks ago with rust-killer, then on Monday this week I smoothed the groove a bit with spot putty. Today I masked it off and applied a light coat of colour-matched lacquer, and the result turned out pretty good.
