Bruce,
Did you have the distributor disconnected? You may have disturbed the
delicate nature of the three wires underneath. The insulation gets crumbly
after twenty years of heat.
1>A quick test: Pull the center wire HV out of the top of the distributor
and ground it. This is a safety step so the engine doesn't try to start.
2>Turn the ignition on.
3> Rotate the crankshaft my hand, or wrench. Every 180° you should hear the
injectors squirt and the fuel pump run for two seconds.

This checks out most of the ignition system. You could use a clamp on timing
gun to check for spark.
