If you make a mistake removing the positive terminal, like hitting the bocy of the vehicle with your wrench, you will get a dead short and major fireworks. But the negative terminal is already ground or the vehicle body, a mistake has no consequence. As a general rule the ground side of a circuit should always be closed last since there is zero voltage potential and should have no spark.
