Subject: Removing heater fan from alternator?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed

Hi- recently found out at least part of my cooling issues (1980 auto/ air-cooled Westy) have been the near total absence of my heater/ cooling system. Why this never occurred to me in reading the Bentley, I'll never know.. The engine Craig and I pulled from his '80 Westy donor van had almost everything I was missing- an accordion pipe for the heater box, the two plastic pipes in the engine compartment, the plastic fan housing and fan for the alternator, and the rubber boot for the fan housing to the body. Still need one more accordion pipe (passenger side if there's a difference).

So, I have now pulled out my alternator in hopes of putting the fan and housing on, but cant get the bolt loose (alt. keeps spinning). The Bentley of course shows some VW tool that looks like a glorified pipe- used, I imagine to clamp the belt tight on the pulley as the bolt is loosened- it is also in a vise. SO- having neither VW special tool nor a vise at hand, is there any way I can undo this bolt and get it to the right torque again after the fan is installed with other tools? Or should I just head into town and ask a shop to do it? Thanks!

I've been trying the search, but not good enough at it yet and it keeps shutting down (probably my computer). Oliver Mueller-Heubach groundhogging@mac.com
