Bosch specifically says on our invoicing from their supplying warehouse that their warranty is VOID if the bushing is not replaced at the same time as the starter. I replace mine everytime. Never had to replace a starter later to test this, but I know the warehouse and Bosch have become very strict with their defective and core return policies of late.

Back in the day VW Dealers actually worked on these and earlier models (actually in 1978) I asked a mechanic friend who worked at Trans Ocean VW in Pasadena, CA on whether or not the bushing got replaced at the same time a starter was replaced. He emphatically said yes, because of liability and warranty conditions they had to honor. Since then, we know what a lot of how Dealers have become ;-)
