I've done it. I knew it wasn't the best idea, but I was able to get some light down into the bushing hole and could see the bushing was still nice and round. Since I didn't have a tap or any other way to remove the old bushing, I crossed my fingers and put in the new starter sans new bushing. That was four years ago. I checked with my mechanic about it and he said it should be fine. Should.
