Allan,

I used the 7.5 FI hose and it is great. I do use oetiker clamps for the connections - super safe connectors that will not leak. 
I have a conversion, so the engine connection is not relevant, but the 7.5 mm does indeed mate up very nicely with the hard plastic fuel lines. In fact it is a very tight fit.
Small Car Performance has the FI hose and the clamps if you are interested. Just click on the Vanagon tab. 
Even if you go with another hose, I would recommend those oetiker clamps - they really are super safe and do not damage the hose.
