One more thing. Somebody COULD have ground and lapped the valves and left the guides sloppy right before you bought the used head, theoretically, which would result in a valve that passed the lacquer thinner test but had a worn guide. But it's not likely that would happen. It has been my observation that every diesel and watercooled gas VW head I've ever examined has had pretty decent guides except for the ones that weren't sealing at the head and set.

That is AN indicator, but not the only indicator, of bad guides.
