I recently put a rebuilt 2.1 into my '85 Westy (4400 miles ago). It has a good 2.1 throttle body and a rebuilt (right out of the box) 2.1 AFM but using Digijet management system. I'm running with the vacuum advance/retard distributor set at TDC and, from playing with it, I can tell you that mine will have the same idle symptoms you describe if I advance it any more.

Mike
