Yep, that's exactly what I wanted to avoid. I think I got it though. IMO, the Bentley should read "insert the drive gear so that with the #1 piston TDC, the rotor points to the mark on the crankshaft.

By the way, any one messing with a distributor gear and lacking a puller might try pulling out the little spring atop the gear and tapping in a 1/4 inch wooden dowel. The gear will pull out easily and insert accurately.
