The procedure for a squishy lifter is to leave it that way. 1 to 2 turns after contact and leave it. It should pump up fairly quick after start up. If not, let the engine run until it warms up and then revving it should wake it up.

And what if a lifter is not firm? What's the procedure for a squishy one, which was fine a few nights ago before it lay sideways in the engine for a few days?
