The 2" memory foam we used for additional pads (not replacement of existing foam) works well and is not heavy, at least not what I expected it to be. We bought a king-size pad and cut it in half, then Karen sewed covers with Velcro end straps so we can roll them for stowage in the wayback. Said pads are more necessary in the upper bunk than the lower.
