RE: My previous post One thing I didn't make clear in my previous post should be included here because it reflects the viewpoint of previous generations. Although my father included me in many projects and gave me free access to the tools and machines, he never encouraged me. In fact I heard him say many times "If he decides to be a machinist I'll disown him". I was always pushed to 'go beyond' him. And that was the attitude of virtually every family I knew, "My kids are going to do better than I did". And that hasn't changed today, every family works to give their children wider and further opportunities than were available to them. But as Doug pointed out the attitude of "I can fix anything" was passed on and serves us well in whatever endeavors we choose to explore. |
