Well you could/ should get an infrared temp gun, and get the temp of the
outlet main hose when it's fully up to temp, and see what is really what on
your gauge that way.
I think there is not a whole lot of variation from one vanagon to the next
actually. I work on dozens of them, and in my perception they are pretty
consistent in how the temp gauges read.
I'd say roughly..........right on the red LED is 180 degrees F.
55 % gauge deflection ( a needle's width to the right of the LED ) is
about 190 degrees.
a fat needle's width below the LED is about 170 degrees F.
an IR temp gun ......you gotta have one. The uses are infinite. I
especially like to use them to identify cylinders not firing as well as the
others - just shoot the temp of each individual header pipe. One a hundred
degrees cooler than the others is often a spark plug not firing correctly,
or correctly all the time, etc.
a million uses, one of which is using it to calibrate your temp gauge.
bottom line though ......it should run right in the middle, which is usually
right on the red LED.
