not too imaginative a thinker there. on a 2WD vanagon the fuel line doesnt't even have to go through a grommet in the firewall. There's a ton of room between the bottom edge of the fuel line and top of the transaxle or whatever. Sounds like he was just looking for an excuse to get out of doing the job to me.
