Don,

Some of this will be NA for you since you don't have a pop top but I
took the upper bunk pads and replaced the foam with 2" memory foam
using the upper bunk foam covers. I put them over the lower bed bumpy
bed and they work really well that way. Not sure about anyone else,
but it was a total surprise to me to discover that the upper bed is
the same size as the lower bed. Get some memory foam in 3 lb density.
4 lb is much heavier and feels almost wet -kinda creepy. I got mine at

  Get a "double bed" size piece rather than a twin - it'll give you a
little left over but will be long and wide enough to fill the upper
bunk covers. Use your old upper foam as a pattern to cut the memory
foam. Memory foam is a bit floppier but also folds up a lot easier
than VW foam so you can stash it more easily. I've removed my upper
bunk extension piece and now have room to store both of the upper pads
in the upper bunk - one atop the other. Since the foam will crush down
quite a bit, I can still puts tons of stuff up there and close the pop
top on it everything will stay put. I tried thinner backpacking pads
but the memory foam is the comfiest.
