Oh yeah -- he also bought a farm in the semi-backwoods of Maine, and judging from some of his papers I found recently, gave serious thought to how a family might get along when there was no longer a need for naval officers. Total Denial in a way, since we lived barely outside the District of Columbia line, and would have been ash. He was more realistic with the non-shelter...

David ps -- stretching hard for semirelated VC -- he was for a time during that period in charge of the Navy's effort to produce fuel cells for submarine propulsion. I found this out a couple years ago -- he took Classified Material seriously. I remember him saying "It's quite a ways off" without a clue that he was involved personally.
