hi,
bottom line, yes, it's adjustable.
other things to keep in mind :
the 80 to 82 style shift linkage ........isn't that great anyway, though I
have seen some that shifted just perfect.
yes, things wear, but I have often found that with good lubrication on
every little part of the whole system that moves.........
good shifting can be attained after adjusting things.
so first, if nothing else, get a high quality spray penetrating
grease.........
then drop the spare tire, spray up into the shift box.
look up in there for obviously shot or worn parts.
pull up the rubber boot inside the van ..........spray those white balls
really good.
- while there, not those two nuts on the oval plate...........by loosening
those and rotating/shifting that oval plate in tiny steps..........
( just loosed the nuts some, and tap gently with a small hammer, to move
the plate around in a controlled many ) ........
this adjustment is where you get the 'gate-ing' ............how it moves in
the H pattern.
there's another spot or two where you can adjust ...........
but mainly.........if things are not super trashed and quite worn out
...........if you lube it really well.............I think there is even a
bushing hidden above the gas tank that you can barely see and spray at from
about 2 feet away, looking above the fuel tank fromt the rear ............
you lube everything really well,
and if nothing is totally falling apart, you can usually adjust it to good
workability.
Some trial and error is involved too - persistence and patience. Good luck

also........what transmission do you have ?
stock 82 diesel vanagon ? Hoping you have the correct front trans mount
for your 82 shift linkage.
