I posted here and on the Samba about differences among oil filters. Yes, it has been discussed before, but Dennis Haynes gave what I thought was insightful information that I hadn't heard before. What's more, a poster on the Samba gave even more info, and has pictures of the inside of the Mann W719/12 for the Vanagon. He also references a website some of us have seen where a guy cuts open a whole bunch of filters, though none of them Vanagon-specific. Anyway, tencentlife on the Samba made some interesting observations about putting in the right filter and making your oil warning light go out.
