dear burning van
i met a woman hippie escaping from california usa today
she has an 89 Vanagon GL with a full westie interior (so the emblems/badges
say)
the stickers on starboard show it to be a Campermobile import etc
her very distinctive vanity plate says 4RN TRVLR
she lives about 1 + hours north of morrow bay and *San Luis Obispo
and here she was in powell river bc --
she was at the moment i was talking to her seeking a person to change her
oil -
6 months into the ownership of a new gowesty engine - (installed by a third
party )
i directed her to ernie the local vw guru
the more we talked the more i understood she knew very little about her van
-
though she had done all her research at Vanagon.com before her purchase -
having said that - she did not own a bently -
she had never heard of the burning van issues
but was going to call the guy who replaced her engine 6 months ago and ask
him if he
had replaced the fuel lines when he replaced the engine
Personally i was amazed at how the dream of owning a VW Kombi is exactly the
same as it has always been
and those who commence ownership with only the barest of threads of
mechanical knowledge
and are at the mercy of those who repair as if they owned any other vehicle
in the world
anyway ... i told her to join this list and the wetwestie list -
reminded her about roadhaus.com - - and the list of emergency vanagon repair
and rescue
and after i drove away i thought i should have asked her if she had a triple
a road side assistance pkg
then i wondered if i was owning a gas powered vanagon - would i be smart
enough to change the fuel lines -
i mean i could certainly do the job -
but would i be smart enough to make it happen in a timely fashion -
yours

There are two kinds of jobs in the world:
Picking up garbage and telling people things.
Successful people do both, with the same good attitude. (riw)
